LOCAL IMAGE EDITING

How to edit part of an AI image without changing the rest

A practical masking and edge-blending workflow for local AI image edits that keep the surrounding image intact.

DIRECT ANSWER

Use a source-resolution mask that covers the object and the visual effects it creates, then blend a narrow transition area into the untouched source. Keep reflections, shadows, and the new object’s full silhouette inside the editable region; use pixel locking when the unselected area must remain exact.

Why local edits develop visible seams

A generative model needs context on both sides of a boundary. A tight mask around the requested object can leave no room to match lighting, grain, depth of field, or background geometry. The generated patch may be plausible by itself while still looking pasted onto the source.

Resolution mismatches create a second failure mode. The mask, source, and generated result must share the same aspect ratio and pixel dimensions before compositing.

Prepare a selection the model can blend

  • Draw the main editable area over the object or location you want to change.
  • Include any place the new object should cast a shadow, reflection, glow, or displacement.
  • Leave a modest transition band around the main area so texture and lighting can reconnect.
  • Describe both the new subject and how it belongs in the existing scene.

Choose the right preservation mode

Natural blending gives the model a small edge region to harmonize color, texture, and light. It is the best starting point for skies, clouds, fabric, skin, and other organic surfaces.

Pixel locking restores source pixels outside the allowed blend region after generation. Use it for product layouts, typography, logos, or any composition where untouched pixels must remain unchanged. The tradeoff is a narrower area for the model to hide the transition.

A quick quality check

  • Compare the source and result at the same zoom level.
  • Inspect color temperature, noise, sharpness, perspective, and the direction of light.
  • If a seam remains, expand the selection slightly and describe the missing environmental effect rather than only the object.
